Portraits of three volunteers

Chahine Hindy"Friendship"
Age 25
10 years working as a volunteer
Red Cross Station 302 – Kab Elias/Bekaa
Certified nurse (Master’s degree in reanimation)

Chahine became a volunteer at the age of 15. At the time, he did not tell people how old he really was. He was recruited immediately after having passed the first selection test. His father encouraged him. He says that working as a volunteer has been the most rewarding experience of his life. It changed his behaviour. Very timid and introverted in the past, he is now very sociable and has lots of friends. He had extensive exposure to the Bekaa Valley conflict in 2006. More recently, the past three months have been very difficult for him. Attacks on his village in the Bekaa Valley were particularly intense.

His opinion of the training course: the new techniques, the very fast and condense rhythm. Despite his considerable experience, he says that there is still a lot to learn. He mentions the use of boards to transfer patients as one example. So far, there have been so many different courses, with each Red Cross station or group offering its own courses. He welcomes this opportunity to move towards greater standardisation.

Rachelle Saadeh"Determination"
Age 26
8 years working as a volunteer
Red Cross Station 201 – Jounieh
Physiotherapist in private practice

Starting from a very tender age, each time she saw an ambulance, she would say “I want to be with them.” As soon as she was old enough, she registered for a two-day training session to learn first-aid techniques. Then, very soon afterwards, she applied to become a volunteer and made it through the interview. She earned her stripes in January 2001 and is well on her way to becoming a rescue worker.

Her opinion of the training course: she attended the course in two different capacities: as assistant to Nabih Jabr, the EMS Department’s Training Coordinator, and as a future instructor. As part of the management team, she helped develop the course. Nevertheless, she went through the course like all of the other participants. She also acted as an interface between the Swiss team of instructors and those who attended the course. She expects the training course will help standardise techniques and improve technical and pedagogical performance. The course already allowed participants to assimilate new techniques and helped them to appreciate nuances. The members of the group accept each other’s differences.

Wassim Nsouli"Passion"
Age 33
5 + 3 years working as a volunteer
Red Cross Station 101 - Spears
Specialised in marketing

His father died of a heart attack right before his eyes. He could do nothing to save him. This motivated him to learn lifesaving techniques. Since then, he has spent a great deal of time teaching at the LRC.

His opinion of the training course: it is definitely needed. The course was very interesting, even though it is impossible to compare Swiss and Lebanese situations. The new techniques can be transferred to the various Red Cross stations. Four people at his station attended the course, which allows them to talk with one another and prepare for upcoming changes. Things will not be easy, change will need to be gradual and it will not be possible to impose anything on anyone. His hope? That all of the Red Cross stations will use the same techniques. It is up to them to show the benefits of uniformity. His slogan? “We are passionate."
