Earthquake in Indonesia: Swiss Team of Experts returns home

Earthquake in Sumatra - Indonesia The 115-man-strong team of Swiss Rescue experts who had been deployed in the town of Padang on the island of Sumatra as of Friday, 2 October, on a mission to search and rescue missing persons and provide medical care to survivors, terminated their operations on Monday evening, 5 October. Swiss Rescue searched through the rubble for survivors on eight sites, labouring under difficult climatic and operational conditions, but its members were unfortunately able to do no more than retrieve the dead victims. The team returned to Switzerland on Wednesday, 7 October. Those in charge of Switzerland’s humanitarian aid decided to maintain a small team of experts on site to continue providing emergency relief and survival assistance to the victims.

Meanwhile, its mission accomplished, the four-man team of experts from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA) has also returned home. However, before returning to Switzerland on 18 October, it had succeeded, working all the while in close cooperation with the local authorities, in targetedly distributing to the needy survivors a medical kit with supplies calculated to cover the needs of 10,000 persons for a 3-month period (given directly to a hospital), 4,000 plastic tarpaulins, 2,000 hygiene sets, 3,200 canisters for drinking water, and large quantities of tools. Furthermore, these relief supplies representing a value in excess of CHF 100,000 were for the most part procured locally. In view of the fact that, with the passage of time, 190 national and international organizations are already, or desire to become, active in the disaster area, Swiss Humanitarian Aid at present no long considers further assistance to Indonesia as a priority task and is therefore concentrating its emergency relief in Southeast Asia to assist the flood victims in the Philippines.
